Meet the Committee
Tony Satchell, Candle Music
How did you get started and what advice would you give to a composer starting out now?
By mistake, as I was working in “real music” at the time when someone asked me for a jingle! My advice would be to be prepared for the long haul and get a business partner.
What was your first job?
British Airways for FCB.
What ads are you most proud of?
In the UK: Saab, Tennents Lager series, Gold Bier, Irn Bru series. In the USA: Hanson, Nestea, Mercedes plus a bunch that hardly got shown anywhere.
What’s your training and what training do you need these days?
None. Be computer literate, keep up with all the latest programmes and listen to absolutely everything.
How do you put a price on your work?
I use the PCAM guidelines.
Would you ever work for free?
No, but I would do friends and GOOD clients favours.
What software do you use and what’s your favourite piece of kit?
Apple, Logic, ProTools + lotsa plugins and some outboard. Everyone’s best bit of kit is their brain.
What single thing do you wish you had known when you started out?
That I would still be doing the same bloody thing 29 years later!
